Technology College Update
As part of the school's breakout programme, we have had a number of specialist Technology College enrichment days, all of which have been enjoyed by the pupils who have taken part. The aim of these days is for pupils to engage with our specialist subjects of Science, Design Technology and Maths, improving their understanding and making strong links between these subjects.

Year 10 Blackburn Rovers STEM day
Here Courtney Allen and Faye Newall from Year 10 tell us a little about their Technology College trip to Blackburn Rovers football Club.
On the visit to Blackburn rovers we had a very fun and active day.
When we got to the stadium we had an introduction the explained what they did there and what their players did in order to keep fit. The activities that we did were a fitness test where we collected data from a heart rate monitor that we wore around our chest. After we had collected our data we used a computer programme to produce a graph and we used this to compare our fitness to Blackburn Rovers youth players! We had a tour around the stadium and also had was a dance mat competition which we both really liked and got really high scores. The day finished with a design activity where we made mouse mats as a souvenir to take home to remind us of our day.
It was one of our best break out days.
Year 8 Disaster Challenge
Year 8 students were set the task of being scientists and engineers responding to the challenges of a major incident in our Disaster Challenge Day. The introductory session, explained why earthquakes and volcanoes occur and looked at some of the recent tragic events where major earthquakes have devastated huge regions. Pupils were then given a series of challenges. First they had to use everyday materials to try to purify samples of contaminated water and then carried out an experiment to look at the effect of not washing hands on the spread of bacterial diseases. In the afternoon our students became budding engineers and in teams designed and built a series of devices intended to aid survival in a disaster. We saw some very inventive and unusual rat traps and arm splints as well as some cleverly designed water towers and windmills! The teams were judged on the quality and usability of each device and the winning team all received a pen-drive for their great efforts.
