Mission Week

School Mission 2010

‘Let your Light Shine' was the theme for our Mission Week just before the half term break.  We were delighted to welcome into school the Animate team from the Archdiocese under the leadership of Fr Stephen Pritchard, a former pupil here in school.  We had our very own extended Animate team and these young people worked really hard during the week learning sign language, role plays and songs so that they could help deliver the many sessions that took place in the hall.  All year groups took part in an introductory session which introduced the theme for the week, and then a very interactive follow up session which went in to more detail.  During some lessons pupils explored the theme further.  Some of the activities included:

Sixth form general RE looked at inspirational people and then identified their own gifts and talents.  They finished by making a pledge about what they could do in the future.

In PE Year 8 looked at the Olympic flame and then took part in some blindfolded activities to reflect on how important light is in our life.  The cheerleaders made up a dance and words that they performed linked into the theme of light.

In ICT Year 9 created a jingle based on the theme using different software and sound clips.

In DT Year 8 pupils designed and made a tea light holder with a personalised message engraved on using the laser cutter, for a person of their choice.

In Modern Foreign Languages Year 7 reflected on what is important about speaking a different language.  They discussed who the people were that brought light into their lives.  Year 7 finished by in either French or Spanish saying what gifts and talents they have ie I would like to .....  I can .....

Business and Travel and Tourism saw Year 11 looking at Fairtrade.  Business - social enterprise, how Fairtrade exists & why. How Fairtrade allows producers to ‘Let your light shine'.  Travel - each given a product & a country to investigate.

In Science Year 8 made glow in the dark slime and came up with the phrase - ‘even slime can shine!!!'

In Maths Year 10 looked at inspirational mathematicians who have made discoveries that have affected our lives.

In Geography and History Year 9 looked at Mother Teresa and the amazing work she undertook during her life.  They also looked at the work currently being done locally, in Liverpool, and around the world by the order of nuns.

In English Year 11 analysed some song lyrics and reflected on good and bad characters in Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird as well as the poem Night of the Scorpion.

In Drama Year 7 looked at individuals who are not generally applauded but have exceptional talents (e.g. young carers).

In Music Year 8 sung ‘Shine' by Take That and then composed their own verse to the song using the theme of the week.  All Year 8 then took part in a music enrichment activity which included Samba, African Drumming, Gospel Singing, World Music and  Jazz improvisation.

In Art pupils made highly decorated Chinese Lamps.  These lamps were then used during the Community celebration and the Masses at the end of the week.

The Community Celebration on the Thursday night was welcomed by parents who took the opportunity to get involved themselves and learn a bit about what had been happening during the week.  The week ended with 2 Masses in the Sports Hall, 1 for each Key Stage.  These Masses were a fantastic culmination to the weeks' activities and were both prayerful and interactive.  Lots of priests from the Pastoral Area were able to concelebrate at one of the Masses and it was great to be able to welcome them into school.  We are now looking at ways to follow up the Mission Week - watch this space for further details!!
