Ever wondered why the modern world is like it is? Why there are wars and conflicts, and why there is more freedom in some places than in others?

In this course you will find out how some countries have become powerful and successful while others remain divided and weak.

You will find out why wars and revolutions happen in some countries and why people are prepared to take part in them.

The lessons won’t just involve taking notes or doing written exercises. We expect you to be able to research things yourself. You will use DVDs, excel spreadsheets, internet: – school history active games to develop your understanding. You will take part in debates and discussions and even role-play situations where your contributions will be important.

The Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in History consists of three externally examined papers.

The total qualification mark is 168, of which 8 marks are for spelling, punctuation, grammar and use of specialist terminology.

Assessment

Paper 1: Thematic Study and Historic Environment

Written examination: 1 hours and 15 minutes

30% of the qualification.

52 marks (16 for the historic environment, 36 for thematic study).

Students will study the development of medicine, c1250—present and the First World War, 1914—1918.

Paper 2: Period Study and British Depth Study

Written examination: 1 hours and 45 minutes.

40% of the qualification.

64 marks (32 for the period study and 32 for the British depth study.

Students study Early Elizabethan England, 1558-88.

Also the Superpower relations and the Cold War, 1941—91.

Paper 3: Modern Depth Study

Written examination: 1 hours and 20 minutes.

30% of the qualification.

52 marks.

Students will study a modern depth studies:

The USA, 1954—75: conflict at home and abroad.
